George R. Loughead was born September 28, 1894 at Unionville, Missouri.  He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Kirksville Teacher's College and later his Masters of Arts degree from the University of Missouri.  He served as Superintendent of Schools at Powersville, Mo. and Oakville, Iowa before coming to Poplar Bluff in 1926.  He held the position of Superintendent of Schools in Poplar Bluff until his retirement in 1960.

He served as President of the Butler County Historical Society for a number of years after retirement.  A series of newspaper articles published in the Daily American Republic and written by Mr. Loughead in the 1960's became the basis for this book.

Living with his wife, Esther, at 1714 Sunset Drive in Poplar Bluff, Mr. Loughead stills maintains an active interest in education and local history. Mr. Loughead has been an active member of the First Christian Church in Poplar Bluff as well as the local Kiwanis Club for 61 years.

We dedicate this book to George R. Loughead for his lifetime of Christian service to this community.
