Loughead's Early History of Butler County PDF Print E-mail
George R. Loughead was born September 28, 1894 at Unionville, Missouri.  He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Kirksville Teacher's College and later his Masters of Arts degree from the University of Missouri.  He served as Superintendent of Schools at Powersville, Mo. and Oakville, Iowa before coming to Poplar Bluff in 1926.  He held the position of Superintendent of Schools in Poplar Bluff until his retirement in 1960. He served as President of the Butler County Historical Society for a number of years after retirement.  A series of newspaper articles published in the Daily American Republic and written by Mr. Loughead in the 1960's became the basis for this book. Click here to access the book's sections and chapters.
